Grammar revision

Topic 1

In
short, grammar is a set of rules which deals with syntax and morphology!

Descriptive
is a set of rules or patterns that underline our use of words, phrases, clauses
n sentences

Prescriptive
is someone (teacher/editor) try to enforce rules about what they believe to be
the correct uses of language

The varieties of grammar

mental=
result of first language acquisition

pedagogical=describes
the rules of language in much detail

traditional=
collection of prescriptive rules and concepts about structure of language

Chomsky is a mental grammar, Skinner
is pedagogical grammar

topic 2

how we
teach grammar

by
using reference and pedagogical grammar

overt =
by notes

covert
= by situation

topic 3

morpheme=
smallest unit of a word that contain meaning

word
formation= back formation, clipping, blending, abbreviation, acronym,
derivation, conversion, inflection, onomatopoeia

topic 4

open
word class = noun, adverb, verb, adjective

closed
word class =preposition, pronoun, conjunction, determiner

one
word multiple class = Items may belong to more than one class. In most
instances, we can only assign a word to a word class when we encounter it in
context.

nominalisation = turning a verb or an adjective into a
noun

nominalisation = 2 categories = derivational affixation & zero derivation
examples

derivation
affixes=eg: fail(v)-failure(n)

zero
derivation=eg: survey(v)-survey(n)

derivation
changes the word class.. zero derivation has no derivation but still can be
multiple class..

derivation
with affixes is like reduplication... but zero derivation is release as verb
and release as noun

reduplication
is an example of derivation with affixes
